Castle Douglas

Anne MacArthur’s Story – Public Submission

Anne Macarthur’s short story tells the tale of driving through the countryside near Castle Douglas. Anne remembers the smells of the pyres, and wanted to share this with the archive.

During the Foot and Mouth disease I had to drive my son to school every day through the countryside near Castle Douglas. I will never forget the smell and sight of burning carcasses in the fields. Even with the windows tightly shut, it was terrible. It was planned for my son to have a holiday with some family on the Isle of Skye but it had to be cancelled as they were terrified that he would bring the disease to the island. It seemed a long time until we were able to enjoy the sight of spring lambs and calves in the fields once more.
