Wendy Stewart’s Harp Piece – Public Submission

Fires at Midnight was composed in 2001 as a simple harp tune for one of Wendy’s older pupils – 86 year old Kate Mackinnon from Kippford. The culling of animals had been approaching the valley from the east and the west and the smell and smoke of the burning pyres of carcasses was evident though the night. She felt that, like the pipe tunes for the battles of old, this war needed commemorating in a tune to mark a moment in history. She has gone on to teach it around the world and the tune has become one of the `go to` pieces for harpers and other musicians in many countries. It simplicity , connects to the player and the listener and the story behind it reminds all of the events of that time in Scotland.
